Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
These comforting words are spoken by Jesus, the Son of God. He reassured his disciples and all who would follow Him that they can find rest for their souls.
When we abide in the Lord, He will provide us comfort and restoration for our weary hearts. God’s presence heals our afflictions that the world brings.
When I was younger, I ran from God and never took the Bible seriously. I tried to find peace and comfort in material possessions. Moreover, I tried to find fulfillment in my life with academic and athletic achievement. Whenever I would win a trophy or get a good grade, my heart would be filled with joy. However, that joy didn’t last long. I still felt empty inside.
When I met Jesus for the first time, my life turned upside down. I no longer pursued the pleasures of this world or chased after acceptance from the world. Instead, I read my Bible, prayed, and listened to sermons all day. Then I would go out and share the gospel with my friends, neighbors, and even strangers.
God’s comforting spirit gave strength and nourishment to my soul. I was no longer psychologically weary or burdened. My rest in the Lord gave me such enduring strength to praise Adonai continuously. When he changed my life, I was on fire for the Lord because I had found the treasure I was looking for my whole life.
Even today, I still have that rest in the Lord. I must confess, as I have aged, it has been harder to find that zeal to know Him. I don’t always seek rest for my burdens but try to alleviate my pain through other means. However, this verse is a reminder for me to return to my first love.
When Jesus becomes your strength and pursuit for happiness, you will have a joyful heart. Your burdens and turmoil will be transformed into a life of victory and peace. Seek the Lord while He may still be found. Blessings to you. Let’s pray.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for providing a safe shelter for our weary souls. When affliction and pain spring up in this broken world, you are there to provide comfort and strength. When we are weary and heavy laden, remind us of the rest we have in you. You are a good God and want the best for us. May you be glorified in our lives. In Jesus name, amen.
