People tend to get caught up in where they should worship God, what music they should listen to, or not listen to, and how their style of praising God looks to other people. Should I be silent, sing along, raise up one hand, or maybe both? However, this is not the right focus and misses the point of true worship.

In John 4:24, Jesus said, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” This means God desires for you to honor and glorify Him with the right heart motive, wherever you are at. This can take place while you drive in the car to work, at home with the kids, on vacation, or in the park. It is not limited to Sunday church or prayer meeting but is a daily act that Christians partake in.

Paul described true worship with these words: “present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable, or well pleasing and perfect.” Presenting our bodies means giving to God all of ourselves: our heart, mind, soul, and strength.

How do you worship God? Are you the artistic type who praises him through art, music, writing? Are you the scholarly type who praises him through grammatical, historical, and exegetical studies of the text? Are you the caring type who worships God by listening to others, praying for them, and developing deep interpersonal relationships? Do you have the evangelistic personality, keen on sharing the gospel with the lost? Please share your story below. I would love to hear about it.

  1. I find the more I mature in discipleship, the more avenues for worship I enjoy. Music and song were always obvious; poetry has become an important medium to me personally; and the small group I meet with is exploring ways to live more missional lifestyles – all as worship and for the glory of our God.
