Psalm 50: Praying Through The Psalms

“Shout for joy to Yahweh, all you lands! Serve Yahweh with gladness. Come before his presence with singing (Ps. 50:1-2, WEB).”

Praise be to God! The divine name, לַ֝יהוָ֗ה, means Jehovah, the existing one. He is Lord over all creation. The universe, the sun, the stars, the moon, oceans, lakes, trees, fish, penguins, lions, and humans will all stand before your throne–singing holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, the whole earth is filled with your glory.

Heavenly Father, we serve you with gladness. בְּשִׂמְחָ֑ה means not only to rejoice and be joyful in the presence of God, but to also soak in the pleasures of your marvelous wonder. For you are a God of compassion and love, the only true being who can satisfy our longings for completeness and vitality.

“Know that Yahweh, he is God. It is he who has made us, and we are his. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture (Ps. 50:3).”

The Hebrew word for know is דְּע֗וּ, and it expresses this notion of acknowledging and declaring what is true. For I know that you are God–the one who made us and everything that exists in this world. You are a good God, slow to anger and steadfast and mercy and grace.

O Lord, you are the Good Shepherd. Your sheep hear your voice when you call to them. Sovereign Jesus, you protect your people from danger. When evildoers try to attack, your Holy Spirit is a wall of fire around us.

You are a shepherd who guards the sheep from wolves and other dangerous animals. Thank you for being our protector, sustainer, and refuge in this broken world.

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name (Ps. 50:4).”

Holy King, I will enter into your gates – שְׁעָרָ֨יו, into your tabernacle, into the courts of thanksgiving. For you are worthy to receive all the glory, honor and praise. May your name be blessed for all eternity.

Bowing down before your throne reminds us that we are made from the dust. I humble myself before your greatness, recognizing that all that I have comes from you. My talents, career, health, family, friends, and all good things in this world are a gift, and I want to honor you for providing hope to my soul.

“For Yahweh is good. His lovingkindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations (Ps. 50:5).”

Everlasting Prince of Peace, you are good. Your lovingkindness endures forever, to all generations. I am therefore implored to go into all the world and tell creation of your beauty and grace. My lips will forever sing of the wonders of your majesty.

As we share your gospel–the death, burial, and resurrection of your son Jesus Christ, may it be a continual light to this dark world. This light of the gospel is the hope we have as sinners to repent and turn to Jesus for forgiveness and reconciliation.

O Lord, thank you for imputing your righteousness unto us, so that we may attain eternal life by trusting in Jesus to save us. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory. Forever and ever. Amen.
