In the Gospels, we read of a man who could not speak — bound by silence, unseen and unheard by the crowds. His friends brought him to Jesus, begging for mercy. Unlike the religious leaders who debated and doubted, Jesus saw the man’s quiet suffering. He took him aside from the crowd, away from the noise and spectacle, and met him in private compassion.
Jesus placed His fingers in the man’s ears, touched his tongue, looked up to heaven, and sighed — a deep breath of divine empathy. Then He said one simple word: “Ephphatha,” meaning “Be opened.” Instantly, the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was loosed. He began to speak plainly.
This miracle is more than physical healing — it’s symbolic of spiritual restoration. The man’s silence represents humanity’s inability to truly hear God or speak truth until Christ intervenes. In one compassionate act, Jesus restored not just sound, but connection. He turned isolation into communication, silence into testimony.
When we bring our brokenness — our inability to hear, speak, or act rightly — to Jesus, He doesn’t shame us. He meets us where we are, looks to heaven, and breathes life into what was closed off. The same Savior who opened the ears of the mute still opens hearts today, whispering to every believer: “Be opened.”
