Verse of the Day: Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” -Psalm 119:105

What a fantastic verse of the day because it illustrates how God’s word truly guides us day by day. This verse reminds me of what Jesus said about himself in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

He also told others that he was the Word of God who became flesh and dwelt among us (Jn. 1:14). Therefore, Jesus is both the word and the light–he is the way, the truth, and the life (Jn. 14:6). This verse encapsulates the essence of our Lord and Savior! He is a lamp to our feet and a light on the path of righteousness.

Before I went to seminary school, I was contemplating graduate work in physical therapy. I heard a verse from the pastor that day in Indiana say: “Do not be afraid or dismayed; the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).”

Honestly, I was afraid to attend seminary because I never had a religious background. I was more comfortable with attending physical therapy because my dad and brother were both physical therapists. But I knew the Lord was speaking to me that day through this verse, and so I told my Mom and Dad I am going to seminary and they were in full agreement. It was God’s word that became a light to my path.

I remember being discouraged and losing my faith in God. My friend in college, who was the one that presented the gospel to me, used to always quote Isaiah 40:31: “Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.”

Then he would look at me and say you are a child of God. You are an eagle! You must fly higher than the rest. This verse became a lamp to my feet as it guided me to trust in God and grow spiritually.

When my wife and I got married, a sweet couple from our church who were missionaries to Africa, gave us a portrait with the verse from Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” What was fascinating about each strand is it was my name, my wife’s name, and then a multitude of God’s names that was all connected together.

It was a beautiful display of having the Lord guide our marriage to keep it solid strong. Once again, this verse hung up in our house for many years, reminding us that God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths!

Currently, in our kitchen, we have a verse that exclaims: “The Lord’s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning (Lam. 3:22-23).” Each time I take a sip of coffee in the morning, I meditate on that verse. It is a fabulous reminder of God’s faithfulness and his patience towards us. It once again reminds me of how God’s word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.

All of these Bible verses in my life are a constant reminder of the Word of God as a lamp and a light. I am not alone. I think of the Israelites and the pillar of fire (Ex. 13:21-22). God led the Israelites through the wilderness with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, providing light for their path. I think of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness (Matt 4:1-11) when he was confronted with the devil and sin. Jesus used Scripture as his guide and light to combat temptation.

Finally, I am reminded of the New Testament stories like Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-40) where Philip was guided by the Spirit, showing how the Word lights the way for understanding. I think of Saul of Tarsus’s conversion to Paul on the road to Damascus in Acts 9. Paul’s literal blindness after encountering Jesus represents walking in darkness, and his sight being restored demonstrates the true lamp to his feet and light to the path of becoming a Christian. Praise be to God for all his grace.

Is there a specific verse that has been a guiding light in your life, helping you through a challenging decision or season? What Scripture has been a lamp to your feet and a light to your path, giving you clarity and direction when you needed it most?
