Introduction
In the vast expanse of the cosmos, the origins of the universe have intrigued and puzzled humanity for centuries. One profound argument for the existence of God is the concept of the uncaused cause, which asserts that the universe could not have sprung from nothing nor existed eternally without a primary mover. This idea is not only deeply rooted in theological discourse but also finds resonance in scientific explanations and biblical references.
Uncaused Cause
The notion of God as the uncaused cause posits that everything that begins to exist has a cause. This principle is foundational in both philosophy and science. For instance, the Big Bang theory, which suggests that the universe had a specific starting point, aligns with this idea. If the universe had a beginning, it logically follows that something or someone must have caused it. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking once remarked, “Almost everyone now believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning at the Big Bang” (Hawking, 1988). This aligns with the Christian belief that God is the initiator of creation, as stated in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Improbability of Infinite Universe
Moreover, the concept of an eternal universe raises significant philosophical and scientific challenges. An eternal universe implies an infinite regress of causes, which is logically untenable. Thomas Aquinas, a medieval theologian and philosopher, argued that there must be a first cause, an uncaused cause, which itself is not caused by anything else. This first cause is what we understand to be God. The Bible echoes this in Revelation 22:13, where God declares, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
From a scientific perspective, the fine-tuning of the universe provides compelling evidence for an intelligent creator. The precise conditions necessary for life to exist are so specific and numerous that the probability of them occurring by chance is extraordinarily low. As astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle famously noted, “A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature” (Hoyle, 1982). This fine-tuning points towards a purposeful design, consistent with the belief in a divine creator.
Biblical Examples
Biblical examples further illustrate the intentionality behind creation. Psalm 19:1 proclaims, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” This verse encapsulates the idea that the universe itself is a testament to God’s creative power. Additionally, the intricate design of nature, from the complexity of DNA to the vastness of galaxies, reflects the handiwork of an intelligent designer.

any religion/cult can make this claim and not one of you can show this is true.
claims of “fine tuning” mean that the christian must explain why his god is either ignorant or malicious since your god managed to choose a constant that makes the sun give humans and other animals cancer, and designed the human body to guarantee that thousands of humans choke to death every year.

It’s highly improbable that the universe just came into existence from another universe ad infinitum, or that this universe is infinite like Carl Sagan would say: “The universe all there is, was, and ever will be.”
Well sorry Mr. Sagan, but that’s old science and was disproved by the cosmological redshift as evidence for expansion of the universe. There was a beginning. That doesn’t therefore necessitate the cause of a Creator, but it does make you think whether the universe can create itself since it’s qualities of occupying space and time are clearly contingent, measurable, and therefore not infinite. Maybe in one direction, but not in the other. So what’s the uncaused cause? Other life forms that are more advanced than us? But then who created them? Maybe the universe did come out of spontaneity, but so far the science is not there. However, Sean Carrol does have some promising ideas on the atheistic side.
As far as the constant that makes the sun give humans and others cancer, isn’t that a byproduct of human sin? If people would take care of the environment and not use harmful chemicals that deplete the ozone, this wouldn’t be a determining factor. Therefore, shouldn’t humans be blamed for not being good stewards?
But in the end, your worldview of the nonexistence of a deity does make the explanation possibly simpler. We wouldn’t have to put a God on trial for this unnecessary “natural” suffering since there really is no Wizard of Oz behind the curtain. It’s just a defense mechanism as a result of biological evolution that gives us a false sense of hope so we don’t slip into nihilism. And the explanation for the problem of evil would simply be: It’s not God’s fault. There is no God. This is chance. This is evolution, and it’s not immoral – it’s amoral. It’s just the cruelty of life.
But if this is the case, then why do our genes continue this defense mechanism of wanting something greater, better, more purposeful in this life? How is this good for our psychology? Is this the best that biological evolution can do? I don’t think so. There is a reason we have these thoughts. We are created in the image of God.

ROFL. It’s highly probable since the universe does exist, the probability equals 1. No evidence at all for your god so its highly improbable that this universe comes from something you can’t show exists. I can show that quantum mechanics allows for something to come from nothing.
Unsurprisingly, you have nothing to show Sagan wrong since you can’t even comprehend what he is actually saying based on the time he said it. As far as we know, yep, the universe is all that there is, was and ever will be. We have no evidence for anything existing other than it. The redshift is part of the universe. Your typical ignorance fails yet again. Yep, there was a beginning, and Sagan’s statement doesn’t say there wasn’t.
Nothing is contingent about the qualities of occupying space and time. But nice baseless claim. We don’t know if the universe is finite or not. The universe is space and time. We don’t know quite what the uncaused cause was, but we know that it isn’t your god since your god has quite definite qualities and not one Christian can show it merely exists. No need to have other concious beings involved either. No need for your imaginary friend. Yep, Sean Carroll has promising ideas. Theists have absolutely nothing.
All you have are god of the gaps arguments.
I do love when Christians claim that human “sin”, a term they can’t agree on, somehow makes the universe different. Christians claim fine tuning, but then they try to excuse their god’s evidently failure with the “fall”, which means they can’t see fine tuning since they have no idea what their god originally wanted. Curious how the sun giving off harmful radiation has nothing to do with what humans do or do not do. Skin cancer has always happened, and happens to animals too. Curious how stupid your god is to have always had this happen, no human activity needed. Your attempt to blame humans fails as usual.
Yep, no god and I do love how Christians lie about how atheism must equal nihilism. That’s a lovely example how your cult depends on lies and ignorance to try to scare people into the cult and to keep them there. There is no reason not to have hope, humans can help each other. Yep, life can be cruel but humans can change that for the better. No god or ignorant theists needed.
Why wouldn’t evolution select for the desire to have something better, more purposeful, greater in this life? It’s great for our psychology since we are a species that grows and changes. The more control over our environment we have, the more we benefit directly. It’s hilarious how you know nothing about biology which means, who cares what you think when it comes to what the best evolution can do? Still no evidence for your god at all, Chad. No evidence that anything comes from it at all. And no evidence you are a Christian since you can’t do what your jesus prmoises. You are quite the fraud.
It’s always good to know that Christians can’t even agree on what the nonsense of “created in the image of god” means.

People got cancer, and choked to death, long before pesticides were invented. And I’m going to want a lot more evidence than your vague implication that it’s all caused by sin. First, show evidence that God exists. Only then can you invoke sin, which is disobedience to God’s commands. 😮
