Proverbs 14:1-5 Commentary: Wisdom, Character, and Speech

Verse 1: “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”

This verse presents a vivid contrast between wisdom and foolishness, using the metaphor of a house. In ancient times, building a house was a symbol of stability, security, and prosperity. The “wise woman” represents someone who exercises wisdom, prudence, and diligence in her actions, resulting in the building up and preservation of her household.

Conversely, the “foolish one” is characterized by recklessness, negligence, and lack of foresight, leading to the destruction and ruin of her own home. This verse underscores the profound impact of individual choices and behavior on the well-being of one’s family and household.

It’s imperative that godly women remain steadfast and close to the Lord. Their role in the family is crucial for the success of the nuclear family. I am fortunate to have a godly wife who is also a loving and caring mother to our four children. May all women in this world strive to become a Proverbs 31 woman.

Verse 2: “Whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly, but those who despise him are devious in their ways.”

Fear of the Lord, in the context of Proverbs, refers to reverence, awe, and obedience to God’s commands. Those who “fear the Lord” are depicted as walking uprightly, meaning they live with integrity, honesty, and righteousness. This lifestyle reflects a deep respect for God and a commitment to following His will.

Moreover, scripture makes it clear that perfect love casts out all fear. Since God is love (1 John 4:8), it must be pointed out that this fear has nothing to do with being afraid of God. Instead, it has everything to do with God’s holiness and power that we ought to fear; while simultaneously recognizing he is full of grace and mercy.

On the other hand, those who “despise” or disregard God’s authority are characterized by deceitfulness, cunningness, and moral corruption. This verse highlights the correlation between one’s relationship with God and their ethical conduct in daily life.

Have you seen in the news people who post the anarchy sign? Anarchy is this idea of being free to do whatever you want. It’s a willful rejection of the government’s authority over individual freedom.

These people are sometimes called “Anarchists,” and in the context of this passage, they could also be considered those who disregard God’s authority. In essence, they are the lawless ones spoken about in Scripture that will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9-10).

Verse 3: “A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride, but the lips of the wise protect them.”

Speech is a recurring theme in the Book of Proverbs, emphasizing the power of words to build up or tear down, to bless or to curse. Here, the contrast is between the speech of the fool and that of the wise. The “fool” is depicted as speaking with arrogance, insolence, and contempt, which often leads to conflict, strife, and harm.

The tongue is a powerful organ. It has the ability to bless and to curse. While our tongue is only a small part of the body, it’s like a rutter that steers the entire ship. If you aren’t able to tame your tongue, the journey you take in life will be filled with turmoil and destruction. Thus, repent and seek the Lord while he may be found!

In contrast, the “wise” exercise discretion, humility, and prudence in their speech, using their words to bring protection, healing, and reconciliation. This verse underscores the importance of exercising control over one’s tongue and speaking with wisdom and grace.

This is noticeable. I make a concerted effort to congratulate parents who raise respectful children. When the parents are prudent in their speech and teach their kids to do the same, the Lord is honored. It should also be noted that parenting is difficult and all of us need grace and wisdom.
