Finding Financial Freedom: 5 Biblical Principles for Abundance

Introduction

As I reflect on my journey towards financial freedom, I am reminded of the power of faith and the wisdom found in the pages of the Bible. From seasons of poverty to moments of abundance, the principles outlined in Scripture have guided me towards a path of financial stability and freedom.

In this blog, I will share five financial principles rooted in the Word of God, alongside personal situations that highlight the significance of these teachings in my own life.

The Principle of Tithing: One of the most foundational financial principles in the Bible is the act of tithing – giving a portion of our income back to God. My journey began in a season of scarcity, where I was barely making ends meet.

I was a poor seminary student who had a part-time job. I would make excuses not to tithe, telling the Lord that I needed the extra money to pay for the classes so that I could serve him in the future as a full time minister. How ironic is that?

Of course, the Lord taught me a lesson with that poor attitude by introducing me to my wife. She was also attending the same local church, and one day I saw her pull a certain amount of money out to give that day. I was shocked by how much and told her I don’t have hardly any money. She said it doesn’t matter how much you have, it’s the intention of the heart that the Lord cares about.

She was exactly right. Even if I could only give $1, that was better than nothing. So, I decided to repent of that type of attitude, stop making excuses, and started tithing right away. Despite my financial struggles, I made the decision to faithfully tithe. In doing so, I experienced God’s provision in miraculous ways.

As the apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This verse speaks to the importance of giving with a joyful heart, regardless of our financial circumstances.
