Every year, as my children prepare to return to school, we make it a tradition to capture a “back to school” photo. It’s fascinating to witness the changes in them as they progress from grade to grade. They grow taller, and their facial features undergo significant transformations.
And as I look back at my own photos, I can’t help but notice the evolving aspects of my own face. For instance, my eyes bear more wrinkles now, my hair is slowly receding, and gray hairs are making their presence known in my beard.
This inevitable passage of time serves as a poignant reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of life on this earth. In times when our strength wanes, it’s crucial to place our trust in His unwavering power, for we will all eventually experience the decline of our physical and mental faculties. We might be strong for a season, but as the years pass, that strength diminishes. Our once-sharp intelligence may also begin to fade.
Isaiah 40:28 reminds us, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.” As we traverse the journey of life, we are reminded to keep our faith firmly anchored in Him. His constancy offers us solace in a world of perpetual change.
Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Our physical appearances and abilities may fluctuate with time, but our trust in God’s unchanging love and guidance should remain steadfast. It is through this trust that we find enduring strength.
Psalm 73:26 assures us, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Though our mortal bodies may weaken, God remains the unwavering source of strength in our lives. Embracing this truth allows us to navigate the transitions and uncertainties of life with confidence.
As I reflect on these annual rituals of change and growth, it’s not just about capturing physical transformations in photos. It’s about recognizing the profound lessons hidden within the folds of time. Life is a series of moments, each marked by change and evolution. These snapshots of our journey remind us to cherish every stage, for they all contribute to the beautiful tapestry of our existence.
Through it all, the unchanging presence of God remains our constant companion. As we watch our children grow and witness our own transformations, let us remember that our ultimate source of stability and wisdom lies in our unchanging God. Trust in Him, for He is the cornerstone of our existence, the constant amid life’s ever-shifting landscape.
