Building a Strong Foundation: Lessons from Faith and Real Estate

Last Sunday, my family and I attended church after an invitation from my son’s daycare. The sermon that day struck a chord with me, as it emphasized the critical importance of building a strong house.

The analogy drawn was clear: just like the three little pigs, we must build our faith house using robust materials and a strong foundation to withstand life’s storms. Additionally, my recent real estate experience mirrored this message, highlighting the significance of structural integrity. Let’s explore the lessons from both scenarios and how they relate to our spiritual journey.

Lesson 1: Choosing Solid Materials

In the story of the three little pigs, we see the consequences of choosing flimsy materials like straw and wood over something sturdy like bricks. Similarly, our faith requires a solid foundation.

The Bible is our “brick” – the unchanging Word of God. In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus compares those who build their house on a rock (His teachings) to those who build on sand (the world’s wisdom). When life’s storms hit, only the house on the rock stands firm.

Lesson 2: Strengthening the Foundation

Our faith house needs a strong foundation. The foundation of faith consists of prayer, repentance, and the diligent study of God’s Word. These elements anchor us during life’s trials.

Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Just as structural engineers reinforce the foundation of a house, we must reinforce our faith through continuous spiritual growth.

Lesson 3: Avoiding Cracks and Weaknesses

In real estate, even seemingly perfect houses can have hidden issues. Likewise, our spiritual houses can develop cracks through sin, temptation, and unhealthy relationships. The enemy seeks to exploit these weaknesses.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces. By guarding our hearts and minds (Proverbs 4:23) and resisting the devil (James 4:7), we prevent these cracks from compromising our faith.

Are there any unhealthy relationships you have that need to be guarded against? What preventative steps are you taking to keep yourself from falling prey to sin? Keep in mind that Satan is a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. We must therefore be cautious and alert, knowing that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but principalities and spiritual wickedness in high places.

Lesson 4: Confidence in the Foundation

Furthermore, when potential buyers lose confidence in a house’s foundation, they may rescind their offers. In this case, my buyer did because the seller’s disclosure revealed more and more of foundation issues that were concerning.

Similarly, wavering faith can lead to spiritual uncertainty. Yet, 2 Timothy 1:7 reassures us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Our faith rests on the solid foundation of God’s promises, giving us unwavering confidence. Therefore, you can trust that the God who spoke the world into existence will keep you strong and of a sound mind to defeat any trial you face in this life.

Conclusion

Whether we’re building a physical house or nurturing our faith, the importance of a strong foundation cannot be overstated. The story of the three little pigs reminds us to choose solid materials, while my real estate experience underscores the significance of structural integrity.

Our faith house must also be built on a firm foundation, strengthened daily through prayer, repentance, and God’s Word. By avoiding cracks and maintaining our confidence in the foundation, we ensure that our spiritual house will stand firm, even in the face of life’s fiercest storms. And always remember, Jesus is our solid rock that can weather any situation. Put all your trust and faith in Him alone.
