There are at least 7 reasons why you should start a Christian blog. Christian blogging cultivates spiritual growth, provides opportunity for world evangelism, imparts a positive influence on the culture, allows opportunity to defend the truth in love, honors God, extends hope to the broken-hearted, and makes disciples for Jesus. In this article, let’s discuss each of these reasons in further detail.

1. Christian blogging cultivates personal spiritual growth.

When you start a Christian blog for the first time, you will have to research, introspect, and think deeply about Scripture. Having a blog forces you to organize your thoughts on a piece of paper or word document so you can upload it on the internet for the world to see. Think about the Bereans. They didn’t have the internet back then, but they did receive the message from Paul with eagerness.

“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true (Acts 17:11).”

They also examined Scripture on a daily basis to see if what Paul said was actually true. The same happens in the blogosphere. Since the information you give on the internet is public, you should be motivated to make sure everything is correct.

Additionally, writing a Christian blog enhances your spiritual development because there is a motivating factor to delve deep into Scripture because you are accountable to the world. When I first started blogging, I  would do extensive research, write it out, and post it on my website.

After I was finished, I could remember many of my arguments better if someone were to ask me a certain subject about the Bible later on. It’s because I took time to think about my own thoughts, type it up, and now if I ever forget a subject, I can go back and reread blogs I have done in the past. For these reasons, Christian blogging has helped me mature and grow closer to God.

2. Christian blogging provides opportunities for world evangelism.

Let me just share with you my favorite statistic. My Christian blog has reached people in 184 out of 195 of the countries on this earth. In other words, 94% of this blog has reached the world. Even if only a few people from each country saw my website, can you imagine how the gospel might spread with just one person? A Billy Graham? This is what motivates me the most!

Since I started writing my Christian blog in 2013, I have had my blog visited 59,452 times. That’s about the population of my hometown city of Kokomo, Indiana. To be honest, there are many blogs out there who do much better than that. But my motivation is not for money or power. It’s not a full-time job. Blogging is an opportunity for me to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to every tribe, tongue, and nation on this planet. And as you can see, this is quite possible. I am just an average guy. Let’ fulfill the great commission together!

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt. 28:19-20).”

3. Christian blogging provides a positive influence on the culture.

You know we live in a fallen world. The internet is filled with lust, greed, debauchery, slander, and evil thoughts. To combat that, we must provide people with searches that can inspire, encourage, and provide a positive influence on their souls. This is a good saying from the book of Proverbs:

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise (Prov. 11:30).”

We must be a righteous tree. A tree that bears much fruit. Jesus said the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This is the type of fruit that will capture souls.

Finally, we must remember that in our cultural battle, we do not fight against flesh and blood. The Bible says this about spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6:12

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Eph. 6:12).”

Let’s combat the evil in this world and on the internet through the power of the gospel. Through the truth that God saves sinners. When we lift up the Son of Man by proclaiming His grace and mercy, the crowds will come. People will listen. People will be saved. Not because of us, but because of the Holy Spirit.

4. Christian blogging allows you to defend the truth in love.

As Christians, we are called to love people unconditionally. This means we do not hold grudges. We are quick to forgive. There should be a desire for us to live in peace with all people. Moreover, when people hear the truth that God loves them, even if they reject it, we are still called to defend this fact. Ephesians 4:15 mirrors this truth:

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”

Speaking the truth in love is so important. Have you ever met someone who told facts but didn’t care about that truth or concerned with the person he or she was speaking to? Truth is important, but sharing the truth in love is an essential aspect for the Christian. Therefore, since the internet is a place where you can blog about your worldview, what are you waiting for? When we tell people the good news that God saves sinners, we are honoring God and His word. Ministering to people, either in person or online, is honoring God and giving Him the glory that He deserves. The book of Samuel says it best:

“Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed (1 Samuel 2:30).”

Starting a Christian blog can be an outlet for you to equip believers, teach believers, witness to an unbeliever, or get the gospel to unreached people groups. Like I said before, my blog has reached 94% of the countries on this planet, many of which are hostile to the gospel. It’s simply incredible the open doors the internet has given us to honor God by sharing His truth to the world.

6. Christian blogging extends hope to the broken-hearted.

Do you struggle with anxiety? You are not alone. An estimated 40 million adults in the United States have been affected by this nemesis. In fact, so many have been affected that the healthcare industry spends $42 billion dollars a year to combat this plague. This number is 1/3rd of the total cost of mental healthcare in the U.S. Aren’t these alarming statistics?

When you create a website, extending hope to the broken-hearted through the gospel is an absolute possibility. People struggle and need daily encouragement. Scripture is full of positive messages. For example, Jesus said, “Cast all your burdens on him. For he cares for you.” How about what Paul says in Romans 8:39?

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

These passages are beneficial to the human psyche. When people feel hopeless, the Bible extends hope. It tells the downcast soul that their life matters. God shouts out very clearly: “I love you!” What a marvelous truth we have to share with struggling people.

7. Christian blogging makes disciples for Jesus.

Jesus makes it clear in the great commission to go into all the world, preach the gospel, and make disciples of all nations. What exactly does the word disciple mean? It means a follower of a teacher. Jesus is our teacher. By reading His word, praying, sharing the gospel, and attending church, we are essentially becoming mature disciples for Jesus.

How does Christian blogging affect our discipleship? When we sit down and think through topics to write upon, such as “Who is God?” “What does the Bible say about forgiveness?” “What are the main themes in the book of Jonah?” and countless other ideas, we are growing in our knowledge of Scripture.

As we increase our understanding, it affords us the opportunity to teach or disciple other new believers. But being a disciple for Jesus is not an easy path. Jesus said in Luke 9:23:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

We must count the cost. Writing a blog requires commitment. It can be a daunting task to keep publishing new content on a weekly basis. There are times when you may have to sacrifice personal time to sit down and write a blog for the glory of God. But in the end, it’s definitely worth it!
